Mr Cross says the international visitors are the key to supplying Australia with fruit and vegetables.
"The small crop industry's basically run by the backpackers," Mr Cross says.
"They do all the harvesting, the packing, the planting, the clean up.
"If it wasn't for the backpackers, the Australian people would not really eat."
Traditionally, the young travellers visit cities like Bundaberg to earn some quick cash.
But Mr Cross says he hasn't seen the same number of European travellers this year.
