The Chicago Tribune posted photos of the Best Large Hostels Worldwide.

LA Times lists the winners from the USA and the Best Large Hostels Worldwide with a special mention of USA Hostels.

USA Hostels San Francisco was selected as the best in the country and also ranked in the top three hostels in North America. The hostel, minutes from the city's downtown Union Square at 711 Post St., has some pretty swell freebies: all-you-can-make pancakes and oatmeal, free Wi-Fi, lockers with electronics charge stations and more.

The original post was regarding the awards given out in 2011. HW has changed the awards quite a bit over the last couple years. Now they have different categories so that small, medium, and large hostels are only compared to properties of similar size. Now there are a lot of awards handed out to smaller properties. They have also incorporated ratios of bookings or reviews per bed capacity in an attempt to level the playing field for the "Best in the World" category. It's not perfect, to say the least, but it is a change.
