The Hostel logo -- house and pine tree

Are you all familiar with the roadside sign that denotes a hostel, showing a little house and a fir tree?

This sign is used on road signs and maps in the UK. Is it used in other countries?

My questions are: Do any independent hostels use it?
Is it "owned" by Hostelling International, and would we have to get permission to use it?

We would like to have the little picture on our proposed sign in our hostel grounds, but I don't want to get into hot water over it.
