I think this is about it. Before this forum we were all pretty lonely. HI probably has something though.
Other than here, what kind of publications/newsletters/other stuff, online or not, do hostel managers read to stay up-to-date on what's going on in the hostel community regionally, nationally, and internationally? Like how hostels in my region are doing on average? Trends? Outlooks? New software in the industry? National regulatory changes? I'm pretty new to this forum and there is a ton of information here, but I'm just wondering how many other resources are available to a hostel manager. What else do hostel managers read?

Depends on where you are located. Some areas have a higher concentrations of hostels so you have the opportunity to buy a pint or a keg to glean information from managers. Government tourism research should be where you can get it sadly not many are good. Australia has good stats. You can also check out this Aussie website http://thumbrella.com.au/category/news which you can register your email and get regular updates. Some of it is mundane but some information can be good.
Here is another site http://corporate.tourism.nsw.gov.au/Backpacker_Tourism_p726.aspx
Where we are, we are just trying to get the government tourism officials to have a definition of backpackers hostels. This at least gives a teeny bit of credibility. Once defined, we will be encouraging them to amass statistics which would help give more recognition to the importance of our niche. Hope that helps a bit.
