Reimagining the $9 trillion tourism economy—what will it take?

Six months ago, hotel rooms were priced 120% above the average seasonal rates for the Olympics period but recent Hotels.com research shows that these prices have had to be dropped by a quarter to increase occupancy with last-minute bookings. Even these lowered rates can’t compete with a boutique hostel in London at £20 a night and hostels just aren’t like they used to be.
Hotel rooms during the Games are costing on average £189 per night (TravelClick) and the average cost of a spectator ticket is said to be £50. Accommodation prices like these are by no means geared towards the youth travel market; those between 16 and 34 years old, which accounted for 34% of all inbound travel to the UK last year according to BETA (British Education Travel Association). Factor in meals plus travel to and from London, and very rapidly a trip to the Olympics becomes hugely expensive for the average family too.
This week the controversial empty event seats seen on television coverage has led to last-minute ticket releases. Add one of these tickets to the price of a hostel stay and suddenly the Games become more accessible. There are over 80 London hostels listed on hostelworld.com and Palmers Lodge Boutique Hostels are one of them. Palmers say “our nightly rates consistently start from £20 per night. Our hostels dispel many of the stereotypes of bare, dirty, overcrowded dorms with uncomfortable squeaky beds; we offer clean accommodation with modern facilities and we don't solely accommodate backpackers, so we should be considered for any type of London break."
Robert Stanca, Site Manager at Palmers’ Hillspring Lodge went on to say, “hostels have moved on with the times and our guests recognise that they can now expect most of the nice features which are standard in a decent hotel”.
