Hostelworld "Character" rating: what does it mean?

I was wondering these days about the "character" rating on the Hostelworld categories. I will ask the travelers too. What makes the character of a hostel? The staff? The decorations in the rooms? The house itself? Many of the hostels in Europe are located in very old houses and that in itself gives character to the hostel, if you ask me? I would be very interested in hearing your opinions and ideas, and how you make your hostel one with character.

Hi Malvina,

This same question was brought up a while back when some others were looking for ways to improve Fun and Character ratings. It’s such a subjective category. Most people seem to think it has to do with decorations and interior design. Others think it has more to do with the personality of the staff or the social atmosphere. Even if we could perfectly define what Character is supposed to mean, each guest will have their own connotation of the word and give you marks based on their own meaning.

It would be better if there were a definition next to the word when guest give their feedback to ensure that everyone is answering the same question, don't you think?
