Hostelworld.com, the leading provider of online reservations to the budget, youth and independent market today announced it has signed partnership deals with Ukraine Airlines and Argentinean airline Aerolíneas Argentinas. The new partnerships will exclusively provide hostels, B&B’s, budget hotels and guesthouse accommodation to over 11 million passengers.
The exclusive partnerships will mean that customers of Ukraine Airlines and Aerolíneas Argentinas will have access to Hostelworld.com’s vast inventory of accommodation; with over 23,000 budget accommodation choices in over 6,000 destinations worldwide.

Impressive! How does such a partnership come to surface? I'm looking to start a new hostel within the next year and I am curious to know how I can get involved with some kind of partnership with airlines or even travel agencies?

I suspect backpackers and independent travelers don't often use walk-in travel agencies to book accommodation, except maybe through STA Travel (depending on the location) and the travel desks at other hostels. (Does anyone know of other travel agencies that are popular with backpackers?)
For agency-type bookings, the hostel booking engines will probably send the highest number of guests.

For Canada, Travel Cuts would be the one as they are based at many of the Universities. Kind of like an STA with an eh!
For partnership with airlines for Canada at least it would be an association or large group. Backpackers Hostels of Canada or Hostelling International Canada would be the best bets and secondly maybe one of the chains of which I think only Samesun would have the purchasing power to do it as you would have to provide multiple locations for an airline to want to partner up with you.
