The SA program sounds like the same they held couple of years ago... I hope they have something more to offer in Dublin, otherwise I won't go again! There is something mentioned about the recession but it's just a teaser now...

Decisions, decisions... I have a plan to take a holiday after New Year, have to figure it out. Will see, if I come, I'll let you know! ;)

I stayed at the Barnacles few years ago, it was all right, convenient enough at the middle of Temple Bar, but a bit far from the HW headquarters, especially with a hangover. What do you think about Kinlay House?

Hm. How about some adventure? There is a place for 8 Euros a night and a 46% cleanliness rating. I´m actually curious how that´s possible.
Kinlay and Barnacles are not so far from each other so I can´t see why one would be better location-wise. They both seem to be OK, but terribly expensive.
Just clicked through 25 hostels. There´s not one I really really want to see... fun fact: almost all have exactly the same bunks!

Well, their last review explains something:
Need lockers at bedside. Bathrooms were unhealthy. No hot water. Card security was ridiculous.
I guess 1) the management just don't care. 2) They have no ideas how to deal with it. 3) They don't have the money to fix everything.
1) Will never visit this site.
2) Will find solutions here.
3) Should get some dough ASAP, fix everything and charge the same as everyone else or they will never have enough cash to make a decent hostel.
Otherwise the 8EUR is for their 20 bed dorm, which wouldn't give me chance to sleep, regardless how drunk backpacker I could be. I tried it already in 2002, I don't think it would work again.
However, I'd gladly steal some ideas from the Globetrotters, they charge 24€ for the cheapest during off-season and a still having a full house?! :confused: (Dublin's starter now is 15-20EUR...) They certainly do a good job then!

True. But they have quads going for 15 Euros, which isn´t bad. I don´t mind dirt, but there are several reviews saying the heating doesn´t work. That would piss me off.

According to the reviews, I suppose there are many things could be resolved instantly by simple caring and organizing. Bad hostels (IMHO up to 70%) usually have some basic functional problems like hot shower, regular cleaning, bugs, rude staff, stealing, very bad location, etc.
I agree with you about a cheap hostel doesn't need to be anal spotless but if a place is too dirty, that could be a sign of bad management, which improves the risk of any other failures listed above.
One of HW's major success was implementing reviews and the rating system. Most people don't want to stay in bad hostels as it could ruin anyone's holiday.

That price is including hearty Irish breakkie as well. Not cheap, including from preparation to materials, definitely tougher to make it than the regular AYCE which you also offer, but at least it is traditional.
Last time it took me 2 days to find a decent Irish cuisine among the plenty fish'n'chips, burgers, ristorantes and pizzerias, but I think it was worth the quest. I can eat the same McDuck anywhere around the world but when in Rome... (even if present day Romans rather go to McD! :( )
I don't know if you've noticed that but they don't have any long term guests, the max. stay is 7 nights. Even Barnacles couldn't afford that, they had a complete floor with workers. They must be able to fill the place up somehow...
We don't sell just beds anymore, but the experience (Quoted from Sion of Nosda ;) ). I'd check what experience they offer for their guest. Also it would be cool for me to exchange some ideas with the hostel I'm staying in.
Also most hostels offer discounts for colleagues, just like you and me. I wouldn't mind asking them for a bargain! ;)

Well, I am really genuinely interested how a 46% cleanliness rating looks like in reality. Admit you want to see that, too. :)
You´re of course right that this is a clear sign of complete carelessness and incompetence of the management. I can stand dirt, but not an unheated room and cold showers in January. Not for three nights, anyway, and I guess I´ll be too lazy to move.

OK, that´s a good point. Hmm. It´s probably not clever to force the luxury breakfast on all guests though. I love it how Salzburg´s YoHo does it. Breakfast is optional and a la carte. You can skip it altogether and sleep in, or have the basic version (coffee + bun) for € 1,50 (?) or regular brekkie or the full monty with yoghurt musli, scrambled eggs and fried potatos for around € 7.

Our accountant just got FREE accomodation at Kinley House for a weekend in February! :)
