I'm Almost Certain That Hostelz.com Has Now Moved to the Top of the Growing Pile of Hostel Search Engines
"Based both on the total number of hostels it describes, and the remarkable number of cities it covers (including smaller cities where you would never have thought to find a hostel), the website Hostelz.com (www.hostelz.com) seems to be the leading source and an extremely useful travel tool that includes photographs of each such establishment and lengthy memoirs of guests' stay there."
Hostelz.com probably does have the most hostels listed, though most of the properties on the site aren't hostels. (If it lists 39,000 properties and there are only maybe about 8,000 to 10,000 hostels in the world...)
TFThostels.com must be slightly behind only because Hostelz.com has been around a lot longer and lists hostels not found on Hostelworld or Hostelbookers -- like Rodos youth Hostel which doesn't offer online bookings.
None of the booking engines seem to list all the hostels -- FUAJ seems to be missing from all websites except hihostels.com.
Hostels.com and Hostelworld.com are the same.
Hostelmania now uses Hostelbookers' properties so they are probably the same.
Hostelsclub and Gomio are two others.
HI hostels is limited to HI hostels, but contains some not found elsewhere.
Bug.co.uk
That seems to narrow almost all hostel databases down to these sites:
- Hostelworld
- Hostelbookers
- Hostelsclub
- Hostelz (probably contains all hostels from the previous 3 plus extra listings)
- TFThostels (mostly an aggregator that contains all properties of HW, HB, and HC)
- Bug.co.uk (I'm not sure on the number of hostels, but this site is great because it only lists genuine hostels)
- Gomio
- hihostels.com (HI hostels only)
- HostelTraveler.com
Any others that are missing?

I read this article.
Hostelz was always a small good site.
However I agree with that comment in the article, that they show the top hostels and it was very difficult to find the others they are so proud of in the customize menu, they should put infront this otherwise is not realy true that big choice.
Other mistake there are listed hostels even in the top hostels which are not existing for years for example in Budapest (which I know well):
Vamhaz , Yellow submarine.
Of course automatic running is important and it is good that they based on the big 3 engine Hostelworld, hostelbookers, hostelscluib , but they should avoid to be a hostelworld clon.

HostelTraveler.com is a purely independent source of Hostels (and other types of budget lodging), with a high degree of unique properties versus the other sites mentioned. HostelTraveler.com is also the only provider, among those listed, offering a proprietary booking engine for hostel websites with virtually any level of deposit collection and unlimited pricing options, and payments services for properties in any location.
