As mentioned in another thread, we have noticed less bookings from Americans, Canadians and Brits in October 2008, compared to October 2007.
Occupancy in Munich was 4 points down, but slightly better than October 2007 in Vienna. In Berlin, we just opened this year so there´s nothing I can compare the 93% of October 2008 with, but I guess more than 10,000 bed nights sold there in October is no indicator for "crisis".
In November, occupancy is actually up (at least so far) in all our houses, again compared with 2007.
While I think a full-blown recession in America (our most omportant source of guests) will have some impact, I´d like to make a point to broaden the view.
I started working in hostels in 1993 in Munich, in a YHI hostel. Our beds sold for 19.50 Deutschmarks back then. The typical salary for a student job was around 15-20 Deutschmarks per hour in Germany 15 years ago.
In 2008, a dorm bed in Summer in Munich sold for EUR 20 - EUR 25. The typical student job salary has not chanced that much. We pay extremely well, our receptionists make 11 Euros per hour. In other hostels, the same job often pays only around 7 Euros.
So: my point is that since 1993, the price for dorm beds has doubled, and most of other prices, too. "McJob"-salaries did not change at all. Consequence: people have now less money to spend on travel, obviously at least in Germany.
I would like to know if that´s the same in other countries, too - because that would be a bad trend for hostels. You know, cars don´t buy cars.
We may have expanded our clientele a lot - hostels don´t only cater to typical backpackers any more, but also to travellers well in their 30ies, and we also have way more travellers from North America and "emerging market" countries, but with all the new upmarket clientele, service had to be improved along with it, making the beds even more expensive.
My point is: we may have an economic crisis now - that´s bad, but it´ll be over in a year or two (probably...). The more important question is: where will we end up in 15 years? 15 years ago, a Munich student had to work one hour to earn the equivalent of a dorm bed´s worth. Now, he has to work between 2 and 4 hours. in 2023, will he have to work an entire day? How many middle class kids will there be left who still can afford to travel in Europe?
