Not at all. There are loads of great hostels which are affiliated with brands and stand alone. Use things like hostelworld and their customer rating system or tripadvisor and let other backpackers opinions guide you.
How important is to check weather a hostel is Youth Hostel Association approved before fi9nalising the hostel.

Search for the hostel's name in Google and go to their website. Most hostel websites have a "book online" link, or some kind of information on how to make a reservation.
I like this website for comparing prices:

Obviously I'm biased as I run an independent youth hostel but here are my thinkings:
The reason and advantages of using a YHA hostel is you know what you'll get. Modern, secure and everyone the same.
The disavantages are that a lot of your money is going on huge international marketing and advertising departments and not on your stay. Independent hostels don't have those sort of overheads. I also think there'd be nothing more boring than travelling round the road and staying in essentially the same place.
There is a YHA just round the corner from me and they charge £25 per night for six bed dorm. If you want anything you have to pay for it, breakfast (another five pounds), WIFI (1-2 more for 30 minutes)
I offer £18 for a four bed dorm, lockers, really good breakfast, free WIFI and tea, coffee, hot chokky etc whenever you need it.
However there are some places that are hell holes, if you're booking online it's worth going to either hostelworld or hostelbookers. They will have listings of all independent hostels but also YHA's, St Christopher's etc.
The further advantage is that the hostels have no control over the reviews so you get an unbiased representation.

I've looked there. They actually just the hostelbookers booking engine so you may as well just go to hostelbookers direct.
