With the growing dependence of youngsters on internet and its social networks, you tube, movies, music, etc, should internet be paid or free. I ask this not as a big investment from the hostel but as a business opportunity in the hostel

We're working with Daphi also, sadly, their hotline is ridiculously expensive.
We do charge guests to use computers, we charge them for the wifi as well as phone cards through the pin machine. The revenues are consequent indeed. Unfortunately the service is not reliable and we constantly have problems with the internet connection if not with the phones.

...if you have limited bandwidth/ downloads, you should limit it to internet only, and block torrents and even youtube if neccessary. This can be done pretty easily by using opendns.

I had a play around with ZoneCD today, seems quite easy to configure.
A faulty network card stopped me from getting everything going though. :

After not being able to connect to ssl.publicip.net with the server I set up even though I was certain the details were right. I punched the address in to a browser and got this message:
The Free server has been retired. The software that runs the service from the zonecd (NoCat) is no longer a viable captive portal solution in this day and age. Also, considering the small number of users still on the Free service the server was also not financially practical.
The "Premium" service is now the only service offered. Free trials are available by contacting support.

As far as I can tell, it's not provided free anymore.
I'm looking in to a couple of alternatives. One being an open source firmware for a wireless router that turns it in to a wifi hotspot. Installing the firmware on the modem (flashing) doesn't look easy though.
