Through the conversation with our guests we realized that guests by themselves do not know what character is and it is really hard to define fun, especially if people do not spend much time at the hostel or other guests are not about connecting with each other...
Anyway our opinion is that would be much better to have tangible grounds for rates as it is much easier to control them and if true fix them really fast, and remove fun and character rating and putting service&facilities and value for money rate instead of them

For example, rating categories can be:
-location
-service and facilities (kitchen, bar, laundry, rent a bike,...), than hostels that pay much more attention to other things than just having a bed can obviously benefit from it
-security (24h shifts, room keys, video security), it usually means more investments and it should be "rewarded" for extra security measures
-staff
-cleanlines
-value for money (offers more than others for same amount of money)

what do you think about that?

HB are certainly moving more in this direction - HW seem to be lagging behind.

What you say would be good rating categories for a city hostel but would be terrible for a hostel out in the country. We suffer already on Location as we only have 5 buses a day and the last one leaves before some of the ferries arrive. As for Security we offer none of the items you mention and do not want them; people know that they can leave laptops and valuables lying around, even overnight!

Fortunately we score high on the other categories; especially Fun and Character!

You cannot please all of the hostels all of the time!

I don't know. I actually like "character." I think giving your hostel a little bit of personality is important. The "fun" category is one our hostel suffers on a little, but it's something we want to improve. I think a fun and sociable atmosphere is important to many guests. As far as security, it depends on the hostel. I don't think 24 hour reception (if that's what you mean by 24 hour shifts) is necessary in smaller places, especially off-season. I don't think guests notice security cameras. I usually don't.

Everybody has different expectations, so I think it's hard to decide what to include in ratings.
