I've seen guitars, drums, and sanshins (Okinawa), but not much else. I think hostels should have a guitar or two for guest use. Many people play but they don't always carry their instruments.
What musical instruments do you have laying around, if any?
Guitars? Drums? Mandolins?
I have seen a few with upright pianos, but never have seen one in use.

We've got couple of didgeridoos...
Was thinking about buying a guitar and a conga but I guess I would be an ideal costumer for a music shop because have no idea about what to buy... so they could sell me anything! :D

I could help you pick one out if you want when I'm in Europe. I travel with my guitar everywhere, and all the airlines let you carry it on the plane and put it in an overhead bin or the cost closet.

I like guitars and pianos in hostels. Drums are another thing. I used to be a drummer long ago, so I have an affinity for them, but the first time I saw a drunken backpacker in someone else's place banging as loudly as he could on a drum at 3am I decided that I wouldn't have one in my hostel.

That would be a big problem indeed, but you could put a note about noise levels should respect the sleepers. Also thinking about maybe locking in the instruments and let them use if they ask to, but not when they are too drunk to play(?). Will see...
Josh, thank you for your offer, may use it when you finally visit us! ;)

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm thinking about putting our piano and guitar on display in the hostel once we open. However, I'm concerned someone will always be banging on the piano at all hours of the day and night and someone will walk out the door with the guitar. I'd love to have them out and not worry. The last thing I'd want to do is attach signs to them reading "FOR DISPLAY ONLY - DO NOT TOUCH!" :o

We have a guitar and a didge; both started life in Australia and were much travelled before being donated to the hostel. They are very popular and, fortunately, the communal area is far enough away from the rooms that we rarely have a "3am" problem.

The place I mentioned with the 3am drummer actually invited the wanna-be musicians to take the guitar and drum down the street to a late night bar. "They love that kind of stuff over there!" he assured them, asking only that they take responsibility for bringing the instruments back when they were finished. I would never encourage someone to remove my instruments for fear that they would actually do it, but this was a very gentle approach to quieting down obnoxious guests. I guess if the instrument didn't come back the hostel would know where to start looking for them.

Here's a photo from Krumlov House -- a great hostel in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic:
There are two guitars and a piano. Two guitars is a good idea because then more than one person can play at the same time.
