New HI Hostel Proposed for Albany, New York

The offer: An overnight stay in a graceful Madison Avenue mansion, with a view of Washington Park and Lark Street nightlife just a stroll away.
The cost: About $25 per night.
There are caveats. Under a proposal now before the city, the rooms at 634 Madison Ave. would be in a youth hostel, not a bed-and-breakfast. That means few frills. And no alcohol. And a shared kitchen, not room service.
The Capital Region does not have a youth hostel, but Albany landlord Joe Galu is spearheading the effort to change that, in partnership with Hostelling International USA, the national nonprofit with a network of about 70 properties.
