I've noticed that news media have been covering hostels more frequently -- but often inaccurately.
The Guardian just published an article today about Singles holidays that says:
You'll find a good selection [of hostels] at yha.org.uk, hostelbookers.com and gumtree.com - or for international hostels, check out hostelworld.com.
It seems to imply that Hostelbookers doesn't offer an international selection (it obviously does). The article also mentions gumtree.com, which looks like a classifieds website similar to CraigsList.org.
If you click through gumtree.com far enough (via London homepage > Services > Miscellaneous > Hostel/hotel) you can find a list of hostel-related classifieds, but I wouldn't call gumtree.com a hostel directory.

Another example of badly researched reporting on hostels from this morning:
The credit crunch is prompting more travellers to switch from hotels to hostels, according to new research.
It's a great point that would be useful when promoting hostels, but I don't see the article citing research that specifically backs up that main point of the article.
