Nordic Countries
Anybody have an opinion or useful suggestions about starting a hostel in one of the Nordic Countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden)?
Any cities that could use another hostel?
Despite having great travel opportunities, this region is off of the main backpacker circuits in Europe, mainly due to the weather and high costs of traveling.
However, when I was in this region two years in a row I found large hostels in Bergen, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Stockholm to be virtually full - in the middle of winter! Many other travelers seemed to be students from all over
who were studying in Scandinavia and traveling regionally. Maybe it was just the right timing, with the schools/universities being on break? But the levels of occupancy seemed to be equally high when I was there in March and when I
returned to Norway a year later in February. Also the city of Tromso, Norway seemed to have no hostel, but all budget hotels were PACKED! Seems like there must be some opportunity in this region. Having said that, occupancy in some
other destinations like Trondheim and Turku was suffering.
I'm also interested in the region of Eastern Finland and cities like Lappeenranta, Joensuu and Kuopio. From what I understand this region receives a lot of Russian tourists - any opportunities for a hostel or tourist oriented hotel here?
I'll be interested to see if there's anyone here who knows the region well and hear what they have to say!
Thanks, Takk, Kiitos!
