Maybe it will be good for Rio's tourism in the long run...

immediately after the olympics might be a good time - rio would've had plenty of positive (assuming all goes well) exposure, the overall tourist infrastructure will have been improved and im sure there'll be a few folk out there who will open up hotels or build new properties for the olympics that will die in the ass once its over, so there could be some good properties going for pretty cheap.

Agree!!! I heard this about new hostels in Beijing that were built forthe Beijing Olympics... same case... the existing hostels even demanded full-payment upon booking, and very very high prices, but too may rooms and many shied away or something... agree, an Olympics shouldn't be good and strong main reason to invest in a new hostel venture in the host city...

Well, congrats to Rio.

A little bit Schadenfreude about Chicago´s bid. Obama wasting time in Denmark while he can´t get the centerpiece of his agenda through a Senate finance committee, regardless of his "Super-Majority". He´ll have time to take care of more important things now.

A huge event like that is a little extra money for a hostel, but not nearly enough to justify opening a shop just because of that.

Hostel prices in Athens skyrocketed during the Olympics - and the backpackers went elsewhere. It was similar with the football world cup in Germany in 2006. Many hostel owners thought it´ll pay them a new Porsche. It didn´t. There were quite a few expensive empty hostel beds.
