Piccadilly Backpackers has just been announced as a finalist in this year's National Business Awards UK. The London based hostel will feature in the Santander Small to Medium Sized Business of the Year Award. ...

Piccadilly Backpackers has been shortlisted for the award after impressing the panel of expert judges with its business model, which allows it to adapt to meets its customer's needs very quickly. Particular innovations include the amount of beds growing from 500 to 750 after acquiring additional space, the introduction of new group facilities which allow the hostel to accommodate groups of around 200 at a time and the introduction of Pod Beds into the hostel.

All very well, but have they made their elevator work adequately? Have they worked out a way of not having queues of up to half an hour at reception? Have they realised that sociability is a vital component of a hostel where there are many solo travellers? Do they now do a breakfast that is the least bit attractive? (When I last visited, several years ago, they had a common room which included several computers in a wing, and a TV always on and central to the seating, so conversations were very limited: plus a brilliantly-lit room of dining tables, unwelcoming and sterile).

I hope they are doing much more than simply having more beds.

I have been there on a February weekday and the place was full. If you can achieve that with a 46% cleanliness rating, it deserves an award. :D

At Klaus' stimulation I looked up the reviews. I've rarely seen such a bad collection of reviews!! All the faults they used to have (which I mentioned above) they still have, plus some more serious ones.

I saw the hostel in its early days, and I thought that, starting with the location, it had a really optimistic feel and the possibility of becoming a great hostel. But after 9 years its initial faults have evidently not been treated at all, and it's got more and more.

But as Klaus says, it's full. I suppose that in a Capitalist world, that's the only thing that matters:mad:
