I just visited a hostel in England that has installed Pod beds in one dorm. They are like compartments on the wall, they look fairly spacious, with a light at the inner (head) end, and a curtain at the foot end so you can shut yourself off from the room. These were 2 beds high, you climb a little ladder if you are in the top one.

If you would like more privacy than in a normal dorm, they will appeal to you. But if you tend to be claustrophobic they may not. The manager told me that 8 out of 10 people like them. They plan to convert another dorm to pod beds soon.

The pod concept has been around for a couple of decades. It is only fairly recently that they have started to be found outside Japan where they originated from. They were designed for a cheap alternative to hotels for commuters.
I did concider trying them out for one of my dorms but it wasn't legally possible. The laws wary where you are in the UK and London. Where I am we have strict limits the number of beds in a room per cubic foot.
It would be interesting to see the size of the actual room.
I know what a lot of places doing is have some rooms that exceed the legal maximum. The get away with this, however, as when they do get their annual visit from Health and Safety they are only interested in seening a few rooms as examples and more interested in food preperation areas, legal and safety certification and risk assessments and don't do any background checks like visiting the hostels website to see what really is on offer.
Having said that, last year we did get a visit from a team of Health and Safety as they were doing thorough checks for the 2012 Olympics (even though it was in two years time and a place could be in a completely different by then) and they were checking hostels websites.
