possibly a dumb question
but which sounds better:
'the smallest big hostel in...'
or
'the biggest small hostel in...'
?

IF there is only these two options, then I'd choose the second phrase... As focusing on the biggest is better than the smallest... however, I'd rather say something positive like the friendly/funky atmosphere or some unique thing which is rather indefinite mark but without having an extreme. Significants as 'best' or else would turn away people but if you have an emotional reason to offer, people can be catched easily.

oh of course - i was just throwing a few terms around in my head for when we effectively relaunch the hostel and i couldnt figure which was a better way of conveying we're a big hostel with a small feel (or will be soon)... or are will we be a small hostel that expands...
damn... im not even sure what we're gonna be now...

Are you talking about the Edinburgh hostel on the edge of the Firth?
That's definitely a BIG HOSTEL!
So if you are really going to try to give it a friendly, small-hostel feel, the message should be just as you hint:
The big hostel with the small feel!
(and if you are, make sure there's a comfortable area without a TV and without background music!! And make it attractive and easily accessible, eg just off the bar, with a glass door, and people can take their drinks in; not one floor away round 2 corners through a non-tempting door).

If you mention size of the hostel, I like uktrail's version:
The big hostel with the small hostel feel...
however, I'd rather say something positive like the friendly/funky atmosphere or some unique thing which is rather indefinite mark but without having an extreme. Significants as 'best' or else would turn away people but if you have an emotional reason to offer, people can be catched easily.
I like to put photos of good-looking, smiling people who are looking at the camera on every page of the website and on all marketing materials. It instantly says "you will meet people here".
(The emotional appeal)

nah, not the globetrotter. i worked there last summer... not sure how you could ever get that place to feel small.
(and if you are, make sure there's a comfortable area without a TV and without background music!! And make it attractive and easily accessible, eg just off the bar, with a glass door, and people can take their drinks in; not one floor away round 2 corners through a non-tempting door).
waaay ahead of you
we have out current TV room with views of the castle next to the bar, but we're moving the TV out of there and into the bar, keeping that room as more of a lounge/internet room. got a load of couches in tehre. the bar is pretty much full of couches and picnic tables now and as soon as i shift the breakfast system around to operate out of the bar ill start building my cinema.
basically, we're moving everything around to one area of the hostel in a series of adjoining rooms. cinema, bar/reception, lounge, kitchen - all connected. should be fun.
as far as the big/small thing goes - anyone remember the movie 'crazy people' with dudley moore? "Porche, it's a little too small to get laid in... but you get laid the minute you get out."

The biggest small hostel!
You´re saying it´s small but it has greater possibilities.
Or that´s how I related to it lol!
