[INDENT]"SF MUSIC INTENSIVE" OFFERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR MUSICIANS IN THE CITY BY THE BAY (OCTOBER 16-18)
San Francisco, CA - The first ever SF Music Intensive, a weekend of concentrated study with some of the Bay Area's most seasoned professional musicians, will be held October 16-18, 2009, at the San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Hostel in Fort Mason. The weekend includes 10 classes and workshops focused on specific professional skills for both established and aspiring musicians.
Highlights include a songwriting class by Grammy nominee Bonnie Hayes -- whose songs have been recorded by Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, and Cher, among others -- and a workshop on developing performance skills by Stevie Coyle, former frontman for The Waybacks.
Sound engineer Dan Healy, most famous for his work with the Grateful Dead, offers a class on how to run live sound for musicians, as well as a talk on the San Francisco music scene during its heyday in the '60s and '70s. Barry Melton, co-founder of Country Joe and the Fish, presents "Legal Self-Defense for the Emotionally Available Songwriter," on how to maintain the joy and openness necessary to write songs, while keeping a functional perspective as songs eventually morph into "intellectual property." Philbillie Milner offers the sage advice born from thousands of miles on tour as a guitar tech roadie for the likes of Tracy Chapman, Primus, and Graham Nash, with a clinic on proper care and upkeep of instruments and gear.
Other highlights include "Licensing and Publishing for Musicians" with Shannon Coulter, former A&R director at Magnatune Records and author of "How to License Music: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide," and "Singing and Songwriting for the Musically Illiterate," in which Kellie Ali helps participants get the most out of their creative work and environment regardless of their ability to read music. The weekend concludes with an instructors' performance at Yoshi's jazz club in San Francisco.
Registration is $425 ($375 for early registration before September 30), and includes two nights accommodation and all meals. Single-day passes are also available. For more information or to register, visit http://sfmusicintensive.com/ .

Great hostel -- it's the one with the cannon overlooking Alcatraz that I posted a photo of recently:
