Reimagining the $9 trillion tourism economy—what will it take?
Self-catering facilities

All of us here know that self-catering facilities (i.e. an equipped kitchen/dining room) are highly desirable features of hostels. Hostels that have them are pleased to promote them, those that don't may apologise for this.
Scottish YHA hostels always used to have cooking facilities -- it's part of what a hostel is about. Many SYHA kitchens have been outstanding. However, SYHA is now a business. And many hostels provide meals. And they want to promote these. Fair enough, but you would think that they would at least mention their self-catering option.
I have just booked at an SYHA hostel. In their 'facilities' list they don't mention self-catering. Have they closed the kitchen?
It turns out that they don't mention it for ANY hostels -- they don't even have a symbol for it! I presume therefore that either all of them have a kitchen, or none of them have one. But after searching their website, I can't find a mention!
I looked in their printed guide (for 2007, the latest one I have). Again, no mention, except in ONE place: There is a page headed CATERING, which begins: "Our catering service continues to expand and improve..." and continues to extol the pleasures of their meals. Buried in the middle is:
"All our hostels still have self catering facilities, however we encourage all groups to make use of this excellent [catering] service..."
I trust this is still true in 2010.
