The Swiss Youth Hostels Association says backpackers spent more than 986,000 nights in the country’s 59 hostels last year and turnover rose to more than CHF 40 million.
An interesting statement from the recording:
"40 years ago, Switzerland boasted more than 150 youth hostels. Now there are less than 60."
The prices in Switzerland are high: 50 Swiss francs (~$46.50 USD) per night for a dorm bed in Zurich. I wonder if the prices of travel have anything to do with the decline in hostels there.

Hi Hostels, Maybe Switzerland is a victim of modern trends in Backpacker travel. More Bp's are traveling to "undiscovered" S.E. Asia and other cheaper and exotic locations. There is simply more competition for the tourist dollar than there use to be.

I couldn't believe the prices when I had a layover at the airport in Geneva last year. I spent $20 USD on a liter or two of bottled water at the airport :confused:
Definitely not a budget destination.
It seems like hostels are booming in some of the relatively nearby areas though: Prague, Berlin, Rome, Krakow, Budapest, Sevilla -- but not Zurich or Geneva...

Everything is ridiculously expensive in Switzerland, especially real estate. The median household income in Switzerland is twice as high as in the USA. THEY can afford it, but nobody else. There are now 233,000 Germans living in Switzerland - they earn fantastic amounts of money while the Swiss complain they´re undercutting their salaries!
