On a lighter note:
"Ho!Bart" was the name of the kitchen staff hardcore punk band of Munich´s YHI hostel, where I worked in 1993. The band was named after the industrial dishwasher in the hostel kitchen.
The Transit Centre Backpackers hostel in Hobart is closing next Saturday. Another hostel called Allports Backpackers apparently also closed last year.
The article suggests that there will be a shortage of hostel beds in Hobart during the summer...
I haven't been there, but there are some nice photos of Hobart on Wikipedia.

Yet another example... why backpacker hostels are not in favour of "flashpackers". :(

I was in Hobart around a month ago reviewing hostels for the next edition of the BUG guidebook and heard rumours that it was soon to close and this article: http://www.news.com.au/mercury/story/0,22884,23414484-3462,00.html confirms it.
Since I last visited Hobart three years ago, four hostels closed and three new ones opened; although that includes one that opened and closed during that period.
This hostel improved quite a lot since the last time I saw it, but it was hardly a top hostel. The reason it is closing is because of the building's new owners rather than the tourism market - that's something that is out of their control.
Just shows that leasing - rather than owning - the building gives you no security.
