Hi everyone,

I have been researching tourism figures for Europe – in particular Spain and although I can find decent sources of information regarding general figures I am finding it hard to locate information relating to youth travel i.e. backpackers

I have contacted some agencies in Spain and have obtained figures, however this is more to do with overall tourism. Not much research has gone into youth travel yet (other than in Australia), which amazes me as it is the fastest growing area of tourism.

What I am trying to locate is relevant information regarding seasonality in Spain, broken down into regions/cities.

Which months are busy and which are quiet? - I can make assumptions, such as cities like Barca and Madrid are year round, where as the coastal areas are more summer based. But what happens in winter months, do hostels shut down?

I need to quantify this for business plan and occupancy purposes.

Anyway I’d thought I’d throw it out there just in case anyone can offer some help on this?

One way to get that data might be to search a website like TFT Hostels and see if the hostels in the cities you're interested in have availability. Another good source of travel information is to ask about specific towns on Thorn Tree. It's often surprising how much obscure travel information one can find there...

Thanks for the info, I already have a town in mind, but I hadn't thought of looking at it from the booking availability angle, although most hostels don't have their availability shown beyond a few months and don't think it can be used for occupancy.

I know its dependent on many so many variables but I was hoping to work out my potential occupancy by using the numbers of backpackers that come to the town/Spain. If twice as many visit in August compared to say January then I could estimate that January occupancy would be half that of August etc etc. I can't think how else I can work this out.

Can anyone out there wherever you are (you don't need to say where!) share their basic occupancy levels or explain how they worked out their occupancy projections when they started out. Did you just assume a minimum 50% for breakeven?? You'd have no idea how grateful I'd be as I am a bit stuck at this point......
