The United States will spend up to $200 million targeting foreign tourists under a bill that passed Congress this week and is all but assured of a presidential signature.
South Florida tourism officials lobbied for the Travel Promotion Act, which creates a $10 fee charged mostly to European visitors to fund up to $100 million a year for advertising campaigns and other marketing efforts. The travel industry would provide the other $100 million in joint ad purchases, donated trips for travel writers, and other contributions.

The United States has not had a national tourism campaign since a spotty effort in Europe in the middle of the last decade that amounted to less than $50 million over three years, according to the travel association. While many other nations have a tourism ministry as a cabinet-level position, the U.S. has only a small tourism office devoted to research.
