Sounds like a real waste of money. As someone in the comments says, the links are "no follow".

I don't see a lot of use in it for hostels. We're listed on tripadvisor (not paid) and from my observation not a lot of hostel customers use it. May be better for hotels, I'm not sure, but they've priced it too high for a hostel to get a bit of click through traffic. Also as pointed out in the replies to that blog post, tripadvisor is not really that interested in promoting your business - the links are no follow and dynamically generated in javascript, so doesn't help with SEO, and the Check availability button links to expedia and not your website.

I was surprised when I recently saw a traveler recommending it for hostels:

(One mention isn't a trend though.)
I think the paid listing isn't worth it. If Tripadvisor would let hostels allocate beds and then took a 10% commission then maybe it would get attention. It's owned by Expedia so they have the technology, though maybe not an understanding of how hostels work...

Why wouldn't someone just look at your reviews on Tripadvisor, and then just Google your place? I haven't used this for our hostel or hotel.

As far as I know, hostels are listed as "speciality lodgings" on Tripadvisor - they don't even have a category for hostels, so as yet I think their understanding is limited. Personally I'd be surprised if they would have a lot of interest in it compared to hotels -the market is just to small and not lucrative enough. Plus if you're paying that sort of money for web exposure you want it to look a bit more obvious than what tripadvisor are giving you for your money.

Very possible... Hostelworld made €19.6 in profits in 2008, but maybe that is a small amount for Expedia. The profits from hostels are probably just a portion of that €19.6 -- Hostelworld lists more hotels than hostels and the commissions are much higher on the hotels.

Well even though the link is no-follow it may have some quality in the way it's read in the algorithm by Google. It's good to mix your links up with some no-follow and do-follow links as to gain trust by the search. But if it's embedded in java script then it doesn't really help either.
