as there are apparently some fans of twitter in this forum (i'm not yet twittering :D), here is what a friend of mine just posted on facebook. it makes sense to me:

If anyone is on twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30... Iranian security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down. Cut & paste & pass it on.

It´s nice to see how people use the internet to organize the resistance, but it also scares the shit out of me somehow. Imagine those "security forces" when they have figured out how to use the internet for their goals. All the communication is public and stored somewhere, as well as the whole list of your friends. How easy it´ll be to round up all troublemakers in no time.

How easy it´ll be to round up all troublemakers in no time.

They already do it in the USA.

IMO, the biggest privacy threat in this kind of scenario is Google.

I know, but at least there´s a debate about these things in the USA. We had these debates in Europe decades ago already - because we had terrorism decades ago already. Still, nobody seems to have learned much from it.

During the cold war, America was always willing to provide generous help to their puppet regimes everywhere in the world. Those dictators got any number of "experts" for torture and other opression techniques they wanted.

Imagine the USA (or any other government with expertise on how to use the web) would have a reason to help the Iranian fascists - they would have much less trouble to keep those protests under control. All those naive kids on Facebook and Twitter would have been picked up by "security forces" before the "election". Those "experts" wouldn´t even have to go to Tehran - all the work can be done easily at home with simple notebooks.
