The new version of Ubuntu is coming out on October 30th - code name Intrepid Ibex. Here are a few of the interesting new features in the alpha version:

This release brings much better support for hot-pluggable input devices such as tablets, keyboards, and mice. At the same time this will allow the great majority of users to run without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Encrypted private directory - support for an secret encrypted folder in your Home Folder
Guest session - This creates a temporary password-less user account with restricted privileges: the account cannot access any users' home directories, nor permanently store data. This is sufficiently safe to lend your laptop to someone else for a quick email check, or to use it as a surf station for guests in your house.
Network Manager 0.7 - management of 3G connections and other types of Internet connections
Totem BBC plugin - a new plugin for the Totem movie player that fetches free digital content from the BBC.

I just looked up that displayconfig-gtk issue and it looks common. One forum thread says that a bug report has been filed.

The problem that people are having is that if the display or more likely display card is not autodetected then you get the standard vesa driver which limits you to 800x600. There almost seems to be a attitude (maybe not deliberate) that things have to be made ultimately easy so as not to confuse people, but if your card isn't supported then manual configuration has been removed. which is a bit odd.

If I could specify the correct driver on install I'd be OK - I think this was an option in ubuntu 7, but doesn't seem to be there now.

You folk are very good to post all this helpful info about Linux for hostel owners. I hope our front office software will be useful for Linux users.

Had the same problems with jaunty and my display issues, but finally overcome them. I discovered that not only did they remove displayconfig-gtk, but they also removed support for the intel i810 driver, which was the one that worked with my system. After days of fiddling I managed to copy the info in my xorg.conf from an older working version of xubuntu,a dn then copy that across to the jaunty xorg file, but still using the vesa driver. Eventually it worked and I now have the correct resolution. Then I find out that xubuntu (which I use) doesn't have the guest account, so it's not a lot of point to upgrade really. Just thought I'd post all this in case anyone has a similar problem to mine and can find this useful.
