I just looked up that displayconfig-gtk issue and it looks common. One forum thread says that a bug report has been filed.

The problem that people are having is that if the display or more likely display card is not autodetected then you get the standard vesa driver which limits you to 800x600. There almost seems to be a attitude (maybe not deliberate) that things have to be made ultimately easy so as not to confuse people, but if your card isn't supported then manual configuration has been removed. which is a bit odd.
If I could specify the correct driver on install I'd be OK - I think this was an option in ubuntu 7, but doesn't seem to be there now.
