USA´s next Prez?
I could pretend this is business-related - after all, if you manage to elect another butthead who will kill your economy for good I will end up being jobless. Americans are responsible for no less than a third of our revenues.
There are a few opinionated Americans on this board, please give me a clue.
My opinion:
I have watched Obama´s Iowa "victory speech" on Youtube yesterday. He´s a brilliant speaker. Wow. Absolutely, err, touching, even for a cynic like I am. Jeez, I almost cried! :o
I´m pretty sure he will make it if he doesn´t say something very stupid in the next months, or if he won´t be assassinated (it happened before, so I wouldn´t rule that scenario out). Your thoughts?
But then:
Is this good news? He can speak for 25 minutes without saying something important. Is he just a good preacher, but the same kind of cynic like everybody else he claims to fight against? He has done a few weird things, like voting for Cheney´s energy bill. Why? Opportunism?
Doesn´t he set the bar too high for his own good? He will have to do some very unpopular things, should he really get elected.
Also:
What´s your word about Hillary? Is Edwards´ claim that "she represents the status quo" unfair or at least half true?
Finally:
Is there any chance a Republican can win this election? Who? And why? They all seem very pathetic to me, but then you guys have a record of electing pathetic Presidents, if you will pardon my saying so...

That is one of the funniest political videos that I've seen. :D

Have a look at this:

Watch "Hijacking Catastrophe", right on top of the playlists.
I did yesterday evening. This is a very good documentary about how the "Project for a new American Century" became the official foreign policy. Part 7 is most interesting IMHO - it´s about the costs of this policy, in terms of lives and money. The bottom line is that it´s not sustainable. This policy only works with fearmongering, and fear eventually wears off. In addition to that, from an economic point of view, what America is doing equals "selling your house for crack". The debt stands at 8 trillion now, and this will have to be paid back sometime. You will pay taxes without getting anything back for the money.
I think having McCain in the White House would result in total desaster. He is not about to change anything in Iraq and he´s probably arleady planning a war with Iran, preferably just before the election in 2012 - to shut up domestic opposition. I doubt that anyone on this planet would borrow America more money for that, no matter how hard they beg. It could even result in everyone wanting his already borrowed money back for fear of default. What that means? Look at Argentina.

What do you think of Obama?

I think Dennis Kucinich should be elected. Seriously.
But then, one has to be patient with the Americans. So, that´s what I think of Obama:
Pro
* He has the right sort of background. The "lack of experience" argument from the Clinton camp is actually very dumb. Obama has the sort of experience from his personal background and from his job as community organiser I would prefer anytime over Hillary´s experience as corporate lawyer. He also knows a lot about constitutional law. That´s very important IMHO because the Bush administration has flushed the constitution down the toilet with all their Patriot Acts and Guantanamo and things like that. You should be very patriotic about your constitution. It is a really good one - it defines what America is (well, should be) all about.
* His approach is all right: show the Washington establishment the middle finger - ride on a wave of popular support and change the way politics is made.
* He seems to be a decent guy. As opposed to Hillary.
* He can beat McCain. Hillary probably can´t.
Con
* His health care ideas are crap. Hillary´s are also crap, but not that crappy. You should elect a candidate who says "I´ll do it just like the French do". Have a look at some European health care systems, they are all fundamentally different from the American one. You can´t reform yours. You need to abandon it and start from scrap.
* He is too religious for my liking. He says he was an atheist when he was young. I am convinced that somebody who has seen the light of reason already can´t possibly go back to believe in superstitions like the magic man in the sky. So it´s probably a lie when he says he´s a Christian, although I´m willing to forgive this lie - he is acuused of being Muslim, so he can´t possibly say he´s an atheist, because most Americans think that´s even worse. One has to be patient with the Americans.
* He says he doesn´t accept money from lobbyists. With all due respect, I don´t believe that. You can´t raise the amounts he is spending from Grandmas and students alone. IMHO.

Interesting take on it...

It would be almost impossible for a non-Protestant to be elected President in the USA at this moment...
He seems to be a decent guy. As opposed to Hillary.
I agree there...

Much better approach than some of the other candidates... like Giuliani, "There is only one issue in this race: terrorism!"

I am really glad this crackpot is out.
I don´t even agree with Obama on that issue.
You should get out of Iraq ASAP with ALL your forces. The recent improvements of the terror situation in Iraq are in no relation whatsoever with the surge. It´s quiet(er) despite the surge, not because of it. The real reasons are:
* Sadr seems to think there´s nothing to win for him by use of force. He wants to get elected. Your puppet regime has just cancelled regional elections. I reckon that´ll change his mind.
* The Sunni strongmen stopped to support the terrorists. Apparently, they are starting to get pissed off by the Americans again, so they might change their minds, too.
Soldures shoot first, then ask. That´s what they are trained for. That´ll only make everything worse, so better get them out. It´s even worse with the Blackwater mercenaries, they shoot first, then shoot again.
Obama wants to sort out Al Qaida in Afghanistan and the Pakistani mountains. Good luck with that. America should rather support the lawyers and judges your friend Musharraf threw into jail. America´s plan B was Bhutto, who was just as corrupt and incompetent as Musharraf. Plan B was blown away. Leave Pakistan and Afghanistan alone, too, or leave it to the United Nations. You will only make everything worse with another "surge".
They don´t seem to get it.

Many years ago in Stirling Youth Hostel, Scotland I met a girl of about 21 who knew the Clintons personally, as neighbours. She commented that Bill was a genuine guy (we hadnt heard about Monica Lewinsky then), whereas Hillary was a bit devious, saying what she thought people wanted to hear (on the lines of: "I really love my children and want the best for them") while really more concerned with her career. I got a random impression about Hillary from that. Everything since has supported that impression.

When I hear her talk I get a bad feeling about her.

If they were my forces I never would have gone in there to begin with... :)
I'm not sure what Obama's position on that is... (or if I would believe it anyway).

His position begins with a disclaimer: "As commander in chief I reserve the right to re-assess the situation anytime" = Don´t take my word on anything about what I promise.
His intention is apparently to get combat troops out way faster than Clinton, but move part of them to Aghanistan instead of back home.
He also wants to increase military forces by 100.000 troops. I´m asking myself what he wants to do with all those troops if he really wants to get out of Iraq. Not to speak of the price tag of 100.000 troops.
