no doubt, but i dont see the US in any different light to other countries in that regard. no state is innocent, they all look after their own interests. increasingly, their interests either coincide or are heavily influenced by specific groups. corporations, parts of the military, religious groups (more so in the US than europe). germany, france, the UK, australia - all guilty of the same behaviour. neither benign nor malevolent. but the US by virtue of its incredibly power tends to get involved balls deep whereas other states simply arent capable of overthrowing governments.
we often dont like to admit it, but our governments would probably behave in a very similar fashion given the opportunity.
i dont believe the US actually buys its own rhetoric - but ill take the US over china or russia any day of the week. at least US interest are more likely to forward human rights and democracy than not.
