i just took some very strange drugs and had a blast.
then it all got a bit too much, so i put myself to bed about 4am.

Sounds fun...
There was a small party here (Okinawa). After midnight we went to a local shrine. The attached photos are of the shrine and of the stand where people were buying fortunes (about $1 USD for a paper fortune).
I was surprised that there wasn't much drinking. I think New Year's in Japan is more of a family-oriented holiday...

I think Japan is very interesting for Christmas.
In recent years, thanks to the marketing prowess of the folks at Kentucky Fried Chicken, the Christmas Chicken Dinner has become quite popular. Many Japanese even make reservations for their "Christmas Chicken" ahead of time. People line up at their outlets to pick up their orders. As a result of KFC's brilliant advertising campaign, most Japanese now believe that Westerners celebrate Christmas with a chicken dinner instead of the more common ham or turkey.
