Hey guys,
In the 15 years I have been owning hostels I had my share of problematic guests. People who leave without paying , steal, disrespect staff and other guests, use drugs etc. The problem there is nothing we can do about them. It's enough for a guest to feel a hostel doesn't live up to their expectations and the next day you have a bad review on Hostelworld, tripadvisor, booking.com etc. But what about when the guest doesnt live up to the expectations of the hostel? If a guest steals in one place, crosses the street to another hostel, no one will ever know about their "history". This is why I started WYG (whos your guest). An internet based platform where registered hostels can check the history of their guest or reservations they receive. This way a hostel can decide if they accept the reservation or not, charge more for the higher risk, charge in advance, keep a deposit or any other measure they seem fit to take.
This service is totally free for member hostels. We have started a crowdfunding campaign this week to be able to continue with this free services. We started 4 months ago in Colombia and we already have over a 1000 members in 4 countries (Ecuador, panama, Peru and Colombia) and plan on expanding to the rest of the Americas within a few months. If you find it in your heart to help up and back us on our crowdfunding campaign, and this way increase the speed we will offer the service where you are, we will be deaply gratefull.
The reactions so far are amazing. I'm sure that as hostels owners, or working in the hostel industry, I don't need to explain here how many times we had to "put our pants down" and smile and be nice to mean and abnoxous guests just because they reserved through Hostelworld. Now we can restore the balance of power.
To find out more about us, see interesting statistics, like what are the most common offences in hostel by %, or from which booking sites most of the problematic guests arrive etc you can visit our crowdfunding campaign.
Cheers
