TripAdvisor.com acquires VirtualTourist.com and onetime.com.
Expedia owns TripAdvisor and other sites like hotels.com. I believe that Expedia was originally created by Microsoft, and was also a part of IAC until splitting off.
Those big travel sites may become increasingly relevant for hostels in the future. Google already aggregates the reviews from some of them in the Google Local search:

I think that those big sites will play a big role in the future. If backpackers plan the trips on a site, why not compare hostels read reviews and book online.
The experience in a hostel is easily ventilated at sites like this. The word off mouth spreads fast on the net. So a good reputation is very very important.
