That´s a weird piece of non-news. Their bookings are up 20%, so it´s little surprise their bookings from Americans are up 20% as well.
Why are they making a point about Americans, then?
AP article about how American bookings are up by 20% in 2008 on Hostelworld.com:
"Many hostels offer private rooms, suites, pools and free internet, bars and restaurants, as well as a unique social experience unmatched by hotels," said Hostelworld.com spokesperson Aisling White. "Savvy North American travelers are coming to realize these benefits can be found even in budget accommodations and not just in Europe."

Easy-peasy. Just another PR article from HW. It means: "To all fellow credit crunch suffering people who can't afford your decent trips anymore, you can save a lot of money staying in hostels and don't worry, they offer hotel standards. 20% more of your other fellow people chose hostels this year, so you should do the same." :D
Did you get 20% more Americans this year, Klaus? Or did the Americans triple since November?

The media are always hungry for content, especially now that "content = traffic = money".
Each article means more traffic, and there is an affiliate booking form right in the middle of the article.
Send press releases at the media and some of them will stick :)

Don´t look at it so negative. There are now maybe 20000 hostel beds in Berlin - for maybe 5000 backpackers who stay there every day. Hostels have improved in the last 10 years and many people don´t know that. Many people still think of hostels as flophouses.

We wouldn´t even have had enough vacant beds for 20% more Americans.

Are those winter numbers or are some of the Berlin hostels empty?
