Building a bathroom

Well...... building a bathroom. I don't really like the idea of having to do this but I found a super awsome amazing wow property for my hostel. unfortunately, this super awsome property will require a lot of renovating, including moving some pipes and building a brand new bathroom from scratch. :eek::eek:

Is it worth it?
I don't have the skills or the stupidity to take this on myself. Therefore, I will have to hire pros to make a bathroom for me.

How much money might I be looking at? Have any of you "built" a bathroom before in your hostels?

Is moving the plumbing around a huge burden when renovating?

It would be very unwise to do it on your own. You can make some calculations on the material such as tiling, number of showers, toilets, sinks, mirrors, etc. Then get few quotes from tilers, plumbers and masons. Pick not the cheapest but the one you can trust and contract for a deadline and penalty payments for delays. Make sure they won't save on materials and complain if something's wrong.

About the burden, once we had to remove a wall and make a new one just one meter away. The estimate was about 1,000$. It ended up 4k. No one saw that there was a difference in level between the two rooms and yes, it took about two tons of concrete to fill it up! :mad:

I wouldn't believe that you could be unfortunate but even construction companies calculate with a 1,5-2,5 multiplier. The problem is that no one knows what's behind the wallpaper!

In my experience to DIY a new hostel can be false economy. People can underestimate what goes into renovating a building and open a new hostel in a timely manner. An overnight stay is a perishable commodity and the longer it takes to open a new hostel the less money you will make. Once a night is gone, it is gone forever and you will never to get a chance to make money on that night, especially during the season. Make sure the plumbing company is Licensed and Bonded and guarantees its work. Read the the contract carefully, as it is legally binding and you want the job done properly.

We are adding 4 bathrooms to the building we just bought. The plumber estimates $15 - $20,000 for the project & that does not include the solar hot water system we would like to add. Ouch! I will do as much of the work as possible, but it will still require a plumber to do the job. Of course 4 bathrooms will require a large hot water heating system & that is adding to my cost.

We are intending to open by the end of the year, sooner if possible of course. If before the snow flys, we will welcome mountain bikers and hikers, if snow is on the ground, we will hope for the skiers. And travelers anytime. Later, Fat Tire
