Hi Harry, can I ask where you got this fact from?
:):cool::)
hi all, i'm very happy to have found this site and have enjoyed reading some comments that u have all written.
My name is Harry and i'm in the UK, I'm currently looking at purchasing a Hostel and am very nervous (that's an understatement)...lol
The occupancy level has declined over the past 2 years. I just want to know if any current owners have had increased or decreased occupany levels over the last year or so, due to the current economic climate.
Is it a good time to buy ????
Many thanx

How much has occupancy changed? Is it still a profitable business?
If you would like I could take a look at it if you send me a private message with the hostel's name...

The occupancy has dropped and at present is hitting 60%. It was at 70% last year and higher the year before.
I have to say that I will not disclose the name at present, (I'm sure you can understand).
Is there any tips that anyone can suggest when researching on buying a hostel???

Are they using a computerized system that tracks the booking source? It might be interesting to see which sources of bookings have dropped the most.

Hostels can increase or decrease occupancy for any number of reasons. Word of mouth of where to stay or where not to stay is one thing you don't have much control over. I know I rely on other peoples experience when I'm backpacking around and take their recommendations along with my research.
Have you done a look at the other hostels around the area you are buying to see what they are offering? I would stay in a few of those hostels as well to see how they compare. I would also stay in the hostel you are looking at to get the feel of it and the clientele. Also make sure to have a good poke around the entire place. Leave no stone unturned and as always get a professional independent opinion of the place.

Our occupancy has increased significantly. Just looking at numbers from HW, bookings have more than doubled over last year for our hostel. Anecdotal evidence suggests that people still want to travel, and are pinching pennies by staying in hostels instead of hotels. I think it's a great time to buy a hostel.
