For those new to hostelling, Monterey Hostel manager Aaron Ely wants you to know one thing — they are very, very clean.

"Some people think of them as grungy backpacker destinations, but we have to comply with national hotel standards," said Ely, a former hotel manager who came to the hostel two years ago.

To alert the locals, HI-Monterey Hostel is hosting an open house Sunday, celebrating the 75th anniversary of hostelling in the United States and the 100th anniversary of the hostelling movement.
