Alaska Backpackers Inn:
Freeform artwork is seen all over the walls, and yes, management encourages it in this backpacker's hostel, which also doubles as a winter home for an eclectic group of workers taking advantage of low monthly winter rates.
"Help decorate," reads a sign by the front desk of the inn. "If you have artistic talent, feel free to paint something."
And so the guests, who hail from the four corners of the world, have indulged their artistic expression all over the walls in the lobby and halls with all sorts of sketches and quotes from their favorite philosophers, among other things.
Alaska Hostels:
There are nearly three-dozen hostels operating in Alaska, with a range of amenities, such as extra storage space and free wi-fi. Some are open only in summer months. Those operating in the Anchorage area year-round sometimes fill up quickly.
