i've traveled the globe, been to many hostels, and i've only ever seen tripple bunks once... in a top rated cool hostel in rio.
at first i thought... what the hell is this... and it was a bit of a task getting up, with a few beers... but kinda got used to em...
question... if you've limited space.. do you think these are a good idea?

I saw triple bunks in South America. I liked the beds (very nice custom made wooden bunks, but I can't find the photos at the moment).
It might depend on the laws of the country though. Do bunk beds above a certain height need to meet safety requirements?

I was also thinking about it! I am not aware of any legal issue in Austria but also have never seen such beds! If they are stable and safe, why not?

Maybe they are totally safe -- I was just thinking about the potential for lawsuits if someone falls off while climbing up (if the bed height isn't within a country's safety standards).

Kind of neat but I wonder what the "squeak" factor of the beds would be? Don't know how I would feel being on the middle bunk as the meaty part of a human sandwich. But in terms of space usage it would work very well.

they're cool... i like the curtain option.
if built sturdy enough, i wouldn't say they'd squeak too much... allot nicer than the ones i saw in rio.

Yes.
My experience says that you should try to do it with a hard wood... Thet won't squeak for shore... This, of course, if you decided to built your own triple bed bunks...

They seem like a good idea - but are they really? In order to achieve 3 beds they have dramatically reduced the distance between the beds. No chance of sitting up and reading unless you are on the top and what about people with claustrophobia? To me they smack of profit before guests but that is just my opinion.

Nice idea but if I saw 3 tier bunk beds i'd start to feel like a rat in a rage. I feel like its designed to place profits over comfort.

I want to agree with most people here: "why not?" And I must say that the photo of the multi-bunk bed is Awesome.
However, even working just one day in a hostel allows me to come up with several reasons why not. Today, for example, we were required to take all the sheets off the bunks in a dorm. The top bunks are much more annoying and much more difficult to take the sheets off of and to put back on, for that matter. Can you imagine having to balance and mess around on a third bunk? No thanks.
The bunks I was on were made out of wood. They wobbled and squeaked. This is not to say that all bunks will. Constructed properly, I think bunks are a lot of fun. I also recently had a conversation about hanging beds, or beds that are on a system of pulleys? An interesting concept to be explored further.
