The YHA, which celebrates its 80th anniversary in Britain this year, has moved on, a point perfectly illustrated by its newest hostel in the heart of the National Forest in Moira, Derbyshire.
It's a purpose-built, eco-friendly affair of wood and brick with solar panels helping to heat the water and collected rainwater being used to flush the loos.
Once inside, it's all functional white walls with paintings and Scandinavian wood furniture.
Soon we were slumped in one of their squishy brown sofas, me enjoying a pint of Guinness and my wife Angi a glass of white wine.
Up until the 1980s you'd be shown the door for drinking alcohol, now they sell it, along with some pretty impressive food. We dined on homemade mackerel pate followed by oatcakes filled with wild mushrooms and stilton cheese for £11.
