I hated it. Fun was one of my greatest points... Thats the whole idea behind my hostel... They should have separated hostels into categories, instead... some people like quiet hostels but most young kids prefer a fun party hostel... id rather keep all these kids, and send the "experienced" backpackers somewhere else... Hostelworld will remove that soon too, I heard. ;/

What is Fun for some people is Noice for the others.
If you're a party hostel just state this in your discription.
Even those kids who drink and party all night the next night would like to sleep and need a relaxing atmosphere.
So up tp my mind FUN is not a point to evaluate a hostel.

Totally happier if Hostelworld also remove "Fun" rating.
This criteria is very subjective.Really agreed wtih Magic Bus for above post..it's true ,if too much fun in a hostel, the hostel might be very loud , other guests could not find good time to sleep and looks terribly dirty.

I think 'fun' is just as important a factor in reviews as any other - all reviews are subjective. True, whats 'fun' for one person is different for another but what constitutes good staff or clean will differ from person to person too. There's no perfect system.

We also have some guests rated us for lower scores for fun but in the very nice review , they said they prefer our cosy property because of peaceful atmosphere and quiet location.Would definitely come back ! Unfortunately, overall rating is around 60 % with low scores in " fun" rating. For us, fun rating is very tricky and some guests are still confused.

Personally I'd be happy to see the end of the fun rating, probably as our place isn't that much fun if you're looking for a party atmosphere. I can see it would be important to a lot of backpackers though. However I do agree with the above posters that it is a very subjective assessment, especially for places that get a mixed customer base. A bit like the location rating - one person's great location is another's terrible one.

Really agree with all of the above and 'Fun' is very subjective to every person.

A hostel doesn't need to be a party hostel to be fun. it doesn't need to have loud music and drunk people to be fun. even a quiet hostel can be fun. Old people have fun, the mormons are a very fun people in their own way....
Movie nights, card games, trivia, a social area where people can just talk without being loud, makes them rate a hostel high on fun. the fact that they met new people, makes them have a fun time...
Even if I'm going to a super clean with great staff hostel, i also expect to have fun... my kind of fun is partying, but its also fun to stay in just chatting with cool people, that tells good jokes and stories...
Each hostel should find their kind of fun....

I agree, and this makes the point that there are two types of hostel which different people would call 'fun', but they are not the same.
I have devised a 'Sociability index', which is a measure of the second kind of fun mentioned by Lasagna. A hostel scores highly if it has a common room which all guests have to pass through, with a large table or sofa area where you cant help meeting other guests, with a staff member who is active around the place, and with no TV in that room. Low values go with hostels that have separate self-contained units, or a common room that is far from the main thoroughfare, or TVs everywhere. I have scored many of the hostels in the UK (see www.uktrail.com).
