I would think that the huge rise in the $A would have had a detrimental impact on Australian tourism in general. 10 or 15 years ago, whilst not a cheap destination it certainly would have been considered better for the budget than most of Europe or the USA. Now on HW prices in Sydney and Melbourne are amongst the most expensive in the world as far as I can see. Has the double effect of making it more expensive for incoming tourists, and cheaper for Australians to go overseas.
I have certainly been surprised to hear from travellers these days that they have found the cost of living in Australia higher than Western Europe. But gas is cheaper still.
