Do you have any stake in the company yourself?
In my experience, 20-30% of your wage is the correct amount for profit share. How much is your basewage?
Hi .
Hope this question has not been answered earlier.
I will be starting a hostel with a partner and he will be the primary investor. I came up with the concept and will be managing the establishment when it is full operational. I am also responsible to the get the whole project started (except for the investment part which my partner will take care of).
My question is , do I work on a profit sharing basis and ,if so ,how much would the ratio be?
Thanks,

I was thinking more in terms of profit sharing rather than having a salary as such. I dont think I will be an employee at the hostel but have more of a co-owner's role.
Thanks for your reply.

Well first of all depending how much of a % of the venture you own, you should receive that back from the profits minimum. Then there are your skills and knowledge that you bring - would the hostel be profitable without it? Could it operate without you at all? Are you the driving force behind the project? Is the primary investor just a backer? Are there any other partners to worry about? What percentage do you think is fair for you?

rjd1983 Thanks for your quick reply.
I think you have put words together better than I was trying to.
Are you the driving force behind the project? Yes
Is the primary investor just a backer? Yes
Could it operate without you at all? No
would the hostel be profitable without it? no
What I would like to know is the % part of things . I am contributing to the project with my knowledge , skills , time etc . so not really sure what is a fair share to ask for as I have never been part of a venture like this before.
Thanks again for your replies!

Ok, how much of the financing is your backer providing, percentage-wise? If you prefer not to give an exact figure, you can give us a range if that's better. And how are the shares held in the company? Is it setup for your backer to have the majority of the shares? A 50/50 share of profits wouldn't be out of the question. You could also negotiate (in writing) that once the profitability increases, you get a larger percentage. For instance, it might take a year or two for the hostel to make a decent profit, and your backer (if they are providing 75%+ of the finance) might want some returns (even if paltry), or have the majority of his investment returned to him in dividends.
For instance, as the hostel gets profitable as times go on, in year 1 you get 30%, in year 2 you get 40%, in year 3 you get 50% and in year 4, you get 60% for example. Or if he gives you a $100,000 as investment, you can get a higher return once he gets 50% or more back from their investment.

My backer will mostly be providing 100 % of the investment and would like to be the co-owner of the Hostel.
There is nothing on paper yet. I using this as start to come with the agreement that we need to reach so its fair for both of us.
Thanks for the information ... it has been very helpful. not sure if there a book I should read on all this stuff , any recommendations ?
