Hi everyone,
I am new to hostelmanagement.com, but i think this is the right place to expose my idea..
I have a large family house (with a land area of 2000 square meters, 3 floors) with 7 bedrooms, a swiminng pool, large garden, etc..
The house it´s in a city near Lisbon, Portugal, that have some beach and nature tourism, especially in the summer, but it´s a bit far from the city center (about 35m walking, 3m by car) no restaurants near..
Not quite a concept of a "traditional hostel" that normaly is a building, in the center of a city, near public transport, etc..
So i was thinking of an ecological or sustainable concept of hostel or guest house, maybe with some land to grow vegetables, a place with some animals or birds, fruit trees, and with some activiteis related to this things..
I probably would have a van to make free hosts transfers to the city center, at least 2 times a day, so that the location of the hostel would not be a problem for travelers that want to be near everything.
Would be certainly more geared for the summer, and probably mid/long stays..
So, would like to know your opinion about this, and also thanked some suggestions

Hi Carlos,
Sounds like a great hostel to me. Check out the Farm Hostel in Ojai. http://www.hostelhandbook.com/farmhostel/ I think they might be doing a similar concept. I would contact them and see if they are networked with other ecological hostels. I'm sure there are many others, I just can not think of them at the moment.

Carlos, that sounds great! Maybe you could market it as a retreat/recovery hostel in addition to an eco hostel (emphasis in the healthy and relaxing qualities of nature). It could cater to road-weary travelers who need a rest from big cities and long transits, or the Lagos party-goers who need somewhere calm to detox and recover for a few days or a week.
No restaurants in the area means nightly group cook-ups. That's always a good thing. Maybe your guests could submit their favorite recipes for a cookbook that involve the vegetables and spices that you grow in your garden? Do you have space for a camp fire? With the setup that you described, you could easily create a communal atmosphere that would draw people in and keep them there for extended periods. It sounds like a winner to me!

I stayed in a hostel in Panama that was miles from anywhere; it was a half hour walk to the nearest road!
