Employers conditions

Hello,
I will write about something that is becoming a very bad hostel trand.
I have been working in several hostels , in several countries in Europe. I am well familiar with hostel work and how hostel actully work.

I have sent job application to one budapest hostel which I will not name, because it would be embarrissing for them if I do, and this is reply I recieved.

Job terms - 40 h per week for acommodation in 6 dorm room plus 100 euro monthly Without food of course.with explanations that it is low season. So that means because it is low season you have to work 8 h per day for bed in 6 dorm room and not earn enough for food for that month. That is their logic.

My reply to those conditions was that is embarrising and exploatain of human power.

I love working in hostel. You dont work in hostel because you want to get rich. No. Hostel job is not just a job it is way of life. You love it, thats why you volunteer or work in a hostel.
But if I love working in hostel, that doesnt mean that someone needs to take advantage of my love towards that job.
Conditions that are some hostels offering are embarrissing and they kill all good reasons why we actually love hostel jobs.
I understand that hostel managers and owners want to spend less as money as possibble, but staff is the most important part of the hostel. People dont book hostels only because it is cheap, they book it for experiance that hostel can provide. Staff is the one that holds a hostel reputation and is in charge for good reviews which bring new guest.
How can someone give their best if you offer them terms that are under every working minimum. How do you expect for one hostel worker to enjoy their job if you are offering so little that they cant even survive a month.

The offer up wasnt even for volunteering but for a real payed job. Maybe I understood it wrong and its not payed job,but volunteering position.
So 40h per week, for bed in 6 dorm room, without any meals, plus 100 euro MONTHLY. - nice volunteering option,isnt it?

The point is, stop doing that. Stop killing the trade nd essence of hostel work.
I am for volunteering position, but try to offer person at least a minimun in that case and dont take advantage of them. Working 40h per week is a full time job that leaves no space for finding an extra job beside hostel job. Keep that in mind next time you are offering a volunteer position or a job.

Working in a hostel is not just a job, it is way of life. A wonderful way of life, but for all future employers, please dont kill the joy of working in a hostel by offering conditions that are degrading and shamefull. Conditions that are not even enough for a person to survive threw month,and yet that same people ( staff ) are the only reason your hostel is good or bad,because staff is the most important part of the hostel.Without them, you have building that can be place to sleep over for one night,or it can be a place where little bit of magic happens.
Stop killing that magic with offering volunteering in which you work 40 h per week for bed.
Remember why you went into hostel job in the first place. If it is only because of the money, than,mate, open a club, hotel, or some other facilities thatwill provide you enough money that you will be satisified,but dont earn that money in the way you are cutting it from your staff.
Everything can be sorted out so that employer and staff are happy. Just dont take advantage of people offering them nothing in return. Dont use that sentance, o you will gain experiance, living for free. They dont live for free in your hostel, they are working for that bed 20-25 h per week. And that is perfecty fine. But 40 h per week is not fine.

Anyway, yeah... just remember why are you in a hostel buissness every time when you post an ad for volunteering position or payed one.
