Frommer has another article about it today:
...Sounds loony, right? It sure is. Our reps in Congress have just re-affirmed that you can't use taxpayer funds to promote such important economic benefits as additional tourism to the United States, even though all of us benefit -- and benefit heavily -- from tourist expenditures within the United States. So the new entity to promote incoming tourism will be funded (a) by private donations, and (b) by fees imposed on foreign tourists.
Imagine yourself arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and being hit by a required $10 per person payment to promote further incoming tourism to France.

...the deputy CEO of Ryanair, the cut-rate Irish/British airline, predicted that ultimately, only five airlines would survive in Europe: Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways, Lufthansa, and AirFrance/KLM. The number of persons employed in European aviation will greatly decline, he said, and the number of flights will be drastically reduced.
