I Been managing hostels with over 150 beds for the past 5 years and now I'm thinking about maybe moving to the hotel industry.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with that?

Hi there,
I used to manage a couple of small hostels, 17- 45 beds max. And now I manage a motel. They are different in that the demographic is differnent- meaning people who want to be social versus people who want to be on their own, and different expectations.
But the physical aspects are the same- someone checks out of a bed/room, you clean it and ready it for the next guest.
What kind of questions or concerns do you have?

I made the move in the opposite direction, starting in hotels and resorts, and then upgrading to hostels.
Kat is 100% right; the process of getting guests in and out is basically the same, but the atmosphere and expectations are worlds apart. In a lot of ways I feel like running a hotel is somewhat easier, because on average each guest tends to need less individual attention from you and your team. That frees you up to focus more on your specific tasks. It also lets you give your full attention to guests when they do need it.
As a hostel manager you have probably taken on just about every aspect of the business yourself at some point, usually without the luxury of a specialized team to tackle the challenges (ex. an army of housekeepers, maintenance engineers, sales and marketing specialists, customer service reps. etc). I would imagine that you have personally had to find solutions for all kinds of challenges that would normally be handled by someone else in a larger enterprise. That has probably given you a very well-rounded experience, am I right? It has probably given you a solid understanding and respect for the work that goes into each of those tasks as well. That understanding will serve you extremely well in a hotel, especially in any management position, because you will understand how any decision you make directly affects the rest of the team.
Out of curiosity, what kind of role are you looking for in a hotel? And what style of hotel is most appealing to you? (Family, business, luxury, budget, all-inclusive...)
