Escape Your Boring Job: Lifestyle Hostels Can Help

During (my recent journey to Ecuador, where I shared the inspiring story of the Pelgrim family from the Netherlands who took over the Mudhouse Hostel in Mompiche), I next had the chance to visit another lifestyle hostel that was actually for sale on HostelManagement.com—Hostel Coco Loco. Situated in the charming town of Canoa, this hostel immediately drew me in with its perfect blend of functionality, community, and dreamlike location.. Nestled along Ecuador’s Pacific coast, this small town has become a magnet for off-the-beaten-path backpackers who seek genuine, uncommercialized experiences. It’s one of those rare places where travelers come not just for the destination but for the community of like-minded adventurers who have found their way here. Unlike bustling tourist hotspots, Canoa exudes a laid-back charm, attracting a community of surfers, digital nomads, and travelers seeking an unpolished slice of paradise. It was here that I discovered Hostel Coco Loco, a perfect example of a "lifestyle hostel" that blends passion, location, and community in a way that’s simply magical.

    What Is a Lifestyle Hostel?

For those already familiar with the world of hostels, lifestyle hostels are a niche unto themselves. These are businesses where the owners’ primary motivation isn’t just profit—it’s about creating a life that combines the owner's passion, a great location, and a place for community. Hostel Coco Loco embodies this ethos. Hostel Coco Loco is thoughtfully designed to prioritize the guest experience—from its inviting common areas to its seamless blend of comfort and community—making it an incredible place for travelers. This focus on what guests want naturally creates an environment that is equally rewarding for the owner because they get to enjoy the same sense of connection, vibrant community, and enriching experiences that make hostels so unique.

Why Hostel Coco Loco Stands Out

In my opinion, Hostel Coco Loco exemplifies the lifestyle hostel concept—a place where passion, community, and a dream location come together seamlessly. It’s an inspiring example for anyone considering a hostel lifestyle. The property boasts a stunning owner’s apartment with sweeping ocean views, private surfboard storage, and a dedicated workout area.   Of course, an offsite owner could just as easily convert the owner's apartment into housing for staff or even additional guest accommodation, but then it wouldn't really be a lifestyle hostel.

One of the standout aspects of Hostel Coco Loco is its recently renovated facilities. Unlike other hostels in the area that are still upgrading, this one is ready to roll. From its inviting restaurant and bar areas—complete with a cocktail menu and it's signature drink the "Coco Loco"—to its spacious common areas, every detail is designed to enhance both the guest and owner experience.

Canoa: The Perfect Setting for a Lifestyle Hostel

Canoa itself is a haven for those who cherish simplicity and connection. The town’s vibe is laid-back, with days revolving around surfing, hammocks, and siestas. While Carnival brings bursts of festivity, the rest of the year is a steady flow of surfers and digital nomads drawn to the area’s natural beauty and affordable cost of living.

The addition of high-speed fiber internet has further solidified Canoa’s appeal, especially for digital nomads. This upgrade transforms what was once a remote, off-the-grid location into a viable destination for long-term travelers who rely on connectivity for work.

    Balancing Business and Lifestyle

One of the most enticing aspects of owning a lifestyle hostel is the flexibility it offers. With Hostel Coco Loco, you can decide how much effort you want to put into the business. Feeling ambitious? You can take a hands-on approach, running the hostel and bar yourself to maximize profits. Prefer a more relaxed pace? Let your staff handle the day-to-day operations, ensuring your expenses are covered while you enjoy the beach life.

Many lifestyle hostel owners split their time between their hostels and other destinations or even their own world travels.  During peak tourist seasons, they immerse themselves in the business, creating unforgettable experiences for guests while turning a profit. When the season slows, they transition to a more hands-off approach, hiring staff to keep things running smoothly. This balance allows owners to enjoy the best of both worlds—financial independence and the freedom to explore other passions.

The Appeal of South America for Lifestyle Hostels

South America, with its breathtaking landscapes and growing digital nomad community, has become a haven for travelers seeking unique experiences. Ecuador, in particular, offers affordability, welcoming locals, and incredible destinations like Canoa. Hostel Coco Loco perfectly illustrates how a hostel can thrive in such an environment while fostering connections and creating a lifestyle many dream of.

And yes, according to the present owner and the small amount of research we have done, foreigners can hold title to land and property in Ecuador. The country’s constitution and property laws allow foreign individuals and entities to own property with the same rights as Ecuadorian citizens.

    Living the Hostel Lifestyle

Owning a lifestyle hostel is more than just a business venture; it’s a way to immerse yourself in life, meet fascinating travelers, and live life on your own terms. Hostel Coco Loco is an inspiring case study of what’s possible—a place where owners and guests alike can share unforgettable moments, all while enjoying a laid-back life by the beach.
